Hi Brenda - Thanks for the images, picture always help give us a better idea of what might be going on.
Did you start the plants from seed, unrooted, or rooted cuttings? The first thing we notice when we look at the first couple of images is that the soil looks very wet. When you transplant a cutting and put it in a container with a larger soil volume, and that soil or media is too wet, it can slow the rooting process. As a plant is establishing it will put all its energy to the area of greatest need. A plant’s root function is to look for food and water so if the media is too wet and well fed roots don't have to grow to serve their purpose and the roots don't expand out into the soil. Plants also focus on rooting before shoot growth and generally will not begin to put on shoots until the roots are pushing out into the soil and have established in the container. The healthy growing plants next to these are probably using more water and have a better root system. If you are watering all the plants, and even those that aren't healthy at the same frequency the plants that haven't established are probably staying too wet. Are you fertilizing? Have you checked the pH and EC? We can also see some marginal burn in a couple of the images. If salts have accumulated in the media it can cause root damage, marginal burn, and slow up the rooting process. If you have also been fertilizing the smaller plants at the same rate as the well established plants salts may be accumulating if the plants aren’t using everything. If the EC levels are high we would recommend a good leaching with clear water to get the EC down followed by allowing the soil to dry down to try to encourage some root expansion. These are just some thoughts based on the images. If you don’t think are suggestions apply please let us know. Any other information you want to include including watering frequency, pH and EC of the media, and fertilizer rates that would also help. Thanks! Thank you for using Ecke Ranch Tech Help on-line! |
