I am experiancing a loss of Poinsettias due to the larvae. We have applied a drench of distance, an marathon, all within the last 2 weeks, but we are still seeing live larvae. What can we use this late in the game, we are starting to see color on some varieties.

A list of more chemical choices that would be safe at this stage of the crop includes Talstar, Duraguard ME, Tristar, and Citation. Apply drenches to target the larva and sprays to target the adults.

Fungus gnats thrive in wet organic matter so it is especially important that you make sure you aren't keeping the media too wet right now. The plants should be allowed to dry slightly between irrigations which will help suppress the larva. The larvas also like feeding on decaying organic matter and algae on and under benches so it is important to evaluate this situation in the greenhouse and make sure you are eliminating any possible areas for the larva to thrive.

You can also consult our
Poinsettia Federal Insect Control Chart (260K PDF) for a complete list of labeled chemicals. We have made notation in the comments column if phytotoxicities to the bracts have been observed. Thanks!
