I've used cycocel as a PGR in the past, but this year have already sprayed (9-1-06) Freedom Red with Florel 3500ppm & intend on spraying 5 days after pinch with another 3500ppm. Will I still need to use cycocel as a PGR and if so when?

First – 3,500 ppm is very high for Florel. The normal rate is about 500 ppm. In warm-hot climates, higher rates work better on poinsettias. I use 1,000 to 1,500 ppm here in Florida. If you did apply 3,500 ppm it will have a significant effect on growth. Also, if that was the amount used, I would suggest not making the second application after the pinch.

Second – In a typical situation, the Florel will replace 1 or 2 Cycocel applications. Whether or not you would need to apply Cycocel later just depends on how the crop grows. Good luck with the crop. Jim

Jim, do you feel 500ppm in southern KS is enough?? Been in the 80s now. I don't know that I see a difference when using Florel, but have used it the last two years. Thanks

Marty, if you are not seeing any effect from the Florel then try 750-1,000 ppm. We do not get phyto on poinsettias until about 2,500, but test a few plants to be safe. Also, remember that Florel needs to stay wet on the plant as long as possible to get maximum effect, so spraying in the early morning or in the evening would be better when it is hot and dry. Jim
