We grew Red Splendor this year as a single stem. It did well last year but split bracts this year so badly we had to destroy most of the crop. Earlier on the forum I ask about this and got no answer. I think I got my answer when I got the new Ecke catalog and see it will be discontinued next year. My question is:
I need a late season red to do straight ups with and need to get some recommendations before I order my cuttings this month. Has anyone any ideas on this? |

There are several good choices available for late single stem (non-pinched) varieties. Red Velvet makes a very impressive plant, as does the new Classic (which offers you the colors as well). Prestige also does well as a straight up for most growers, especially the Maroon which is a few days later than the original red.

I will tell you what a breeder told me. Recieving advice from her was like getting blessed by the poinsettia pope.
Use a different fertilizer. Ammonia based nitrogen will trick the plant into growing when it would normally decide to send out a cynthia. It will encourage softer growth and should allow the plant to reach the intended height without splitting. Plus high humidity is key. I am going to take her advice. |
