Any late season suggestions for making my whites ~Whiter~. I have excellent color on all varieites except these. They are more cream/yellow/green than I want and expected. We are growing Enduring, Jester White and Jester Marble. I tried new ~2X Tide Ultra with Bleach Alternative~... just kidding! I may though! We had the same issue with Freedom White last year. What effects this more temps, pH, EC etc. Is there time to do much in a week? They are improving but VERY slowly.
I have never found a good "egg shell" white Poinsettia to grow for my area and have just stuck with Peterstar White for many years now. I let my new customers know by pictures, especially those used for weddings, that the whites will be a slightly "off" color and in my advertising call them "Champagne Whites".....Michael Pawelek
I agree with Mark. A 1-2ppm spray of promalin or fascination will whiten them right up. This late in the season you will not see a height increase if only the top of the plant is sprayed. It takes about 10 days to fully whiten the bracts. We run our house cooler in December (55F)to save money on heat. Ive been doing this for almost 15 years now and it works great.
Most white cultivars on the market lean towards a creamy white. Snowcap is our whitest white but may not be your best choice for certain container sizes or have the right timing you need.
So what to do to whiten up cultivars like Enduring White or Freedom White........
If finishing temperatures are too cool before there is enough bract expansion the bracts can take on a greenish cast. If you are seeing this and your temperatures are cool, warming temperatures will help with expansion and whiter whites.
Some growers are using Fascination to brighten their whites. Fascination when applied right before sale enhances bract expansion and can brighten white bracts. We suggest trying an application on a few plants to see what you think. The rate would be 2 ppm and the application should be targeted to only the bracts and applied as a fine mist and not to the point of runoff. Each variety may respond differently so try the application on each. The result is rapid bract expansion so on your Jester Whites where the key selling point is the upright bracts you may not like the results because it may make the bracts lay down.
Good Luck - there are many growers that are curious about this technique so if you decide to give it a try let us know how it turns out!
