This year I am using SunGro Metro Mix 830.
I tested the media with a new BlueLab Combo Meter. I did the pour through method. (Wetting the media, waiting an hour then wetted the media again with distilled water to collect the sample.) Starting PH is 5.4 and the EC is 3.8. Would this be correct for the EC to be 3.8? Based on everything I’ve read, this is high. |

3.8 does seem a little high. However, keep in mind that testing using the PourThru method will result in slightly higher values than those from a SME (saturated media extract). Most of the literature give ranges for EC for the SME method, check the literature you are referencing to see which was used.
Try retesting (making sure that your meter is calibrated correctly). Test at least 5 pots to find an average. |

Did your EC meter come with any type of calibration fluid, or internal calibration check? What does it read in plain distilled water? If I get EC readings of 3.5-4.0 (Pour Thru)in my crops I generally leach one watering and tone down my constant feed program until the numbers drop a bit lower. Did your media come with a fertilizer "Pre-Charge" or any slow release fertilizer already incorporated?.....Michael Pawelek

Thanks Brian, I'm going to test a few more pots
for an average. I can calibrate the PH, but not the EC. Says it pre-calibrated at the factory. Thanks Michael, The one thing I didn't check was the distilled water. (I'll do that.)I'm thinking the media did come with a "Pre-Charge" fertilizer. |
