Need to know natural flowering date, response time , and vigor for Ice Punch. Our sales people had the opportunity to purchase some at OFA. They thought it was cool and didn't have an idea of pot sizes or timing. We are receiving plants week 31. Can you help?

Ice Punch is a medium vigor variety with an 8 week response time. It initiates early so timing is similar to Freedom. It works well in a variety of containers sizes. Even though it has smaller bracts don't underestimate its vigor. Growth regulating early to keep the plant toned and in the height tracking window is important as late PGR applications can have a negative impact on the expanding bracts at finish. The white and red pattern on the bracts is more striking on a mature bract with good expansion. Ice Punch does benefit from the Florel “sandwich” technique to enhance branching. Ice Punch does have smaller leaves, bracts, and a less vigorous root system. Be mindful of irrigation practices to avoid problems with root rotting and fungus gnats.

There are several growers doing Ice Punch for the first time this year. To back up the Ecke comments – be careful early to get roots established. If it is planted late and over watered it does not catch up well. However, once it starts growing, it is not very responsive to PGRs so do not let it get too tall and do not let it get crowded at the end. We have done them in 4.5, 6, 6.5, 8 and 10 inch, as well as 4 inch transplanted into 14” bowls. It works in all these formats and consumers really like the novel appearance. The first bracts to develop may not have much white coloration at first, but it will develop later. Plants looks better as bracts become more mature. Jim
