OK, I have some Whitestar 6" that are starting to go down from fungus gnat larvae. What are my safest options for a knock down(not the adults)?

The best treatment I have found for fungas gnats is the product nemashield. It takes it a few weeks to work but gives long term control. The product is a nematode that feends and reproduces inside the larva of the fungas gnat killing it and producing off spring to infect other larva. For me it has worked better than any chemical control.

Hi Lance -

Nemashield is a good product for prevention but it does take some time to work so if your infestation is getting out of control it is time to think about other products as well. For heavy infestations we have used Talstar as a drench to take care of the larva. The insect growth regulators such as Distance or Enstar also work well but here again, they take a little time to work.

Remember that fungus gnats may also be an indication that the soil is too wet. The plants should be going through a good wet/dry cycle right now. Also make sure there is not free standing water and algae in the greenhouse. Fungus gnats thrive on decaying organic matter so make sure the benches and under the benches are also weed and algae free. Many growers use lime under the benches if algae can be a problem. Hope this helps.....
