here in central oregon the summer days are very hot and strong sun. How well do full sun zonal geranium patriot bright red geranums do in partial shade? like under a well trimmed up pine tree?

Zonals prefer part to full sun. As long as they are not shaded all the time by the tree you're planting them under they should be just fine. They will probably actually appreciate the shade during really warm weather.
