My heliotrope plugs have been on my bench since Mar. 23. They are developing flowers. Should I pinch/cut these flowers off.

Hi Pam -

We do not produce Heliotrope so the information we have to offer would be more about vegetative annuals in general.

If most annuals (and this would apply to Heliotrope) set bud too early before the plants have reached a saleable size the plants put most of their energy into reproduction and flowering. If most of their energy is being used for reproduction, vegetative growth can be slower. While the plants will have nice flower power, in terms of size, the plants may not be saleable.

With most of the annuals we produce, we recommend pinching off flowers until the plants are established and have a good size root system. The only thing to keep in mind is that pinching may delay flower for up to six weeks so you have to make your decision of whether or not to pinch based on when you plan to sell the plants. If you are happy with the plants size and branching than pinching is probably not necessary.

We would also suggest that you contact your supplier as there may be more detailed cultural information available specific to the particular variety you are growing.

Hope this helps!
