A grower I know has a problem. I do not have a picture yet, but here is the description.
"Seeing at small black fly on verbena that resembles fungus gnat but not. Flies are very sluggish and almost imobile. The plant has a very lite honeydue like substance sticking to the leaves. Any ideas. " |

Hi Mark -
Pictures would be great here. If you can get one and post it on the board that would really help with identification. Based solely on your description and the fact that you mention honeydew on the leaves makes us think about a species of aphid. The adult life cycle of aphid species is winged so they will have the appearance of a small fly. The Melon aphid specifically can have a black appearance to it and verbena is also a known host for this type of aphid. Proper identification of aphid species is essential in choosing the right chemical controls. We recommend that your grower have the insect identified by a lab but we would will also be happy to take a look at a picture. For a list of chemicals labeled for control of aphids consult our The Flower Fields Federal Insect & Mite Control Chart (541K) Thank you for using Ecke Ranch Tech Help on-line! |
